Title: Beyond Earth Orbit: Operational Realities of Deep Space Exploration
Speaker: 한동석 박사(Dr. Don Han) (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory)
Date & Time: 2025-06-12 (Thu) 10:30
Location: Room 638, Science Hall
Abstract:
Earth-orbiting satellites and deep space missions require fundamentally different approaches to spacecraft design and mission operations.  This talk will explore the key operational challenges unique to deep space missions, with a focus on engineering constraints and ground system support. Topics will include differences in telecommunications strategies, the use of ground antenna networks such as NASA’s Deep Space Network, and the higher navigation accuracy required for interplanetary flight. The presentation will also examine delta-V budgets for both Earth-orbiting and deep space missions, and highlight mission design techniques—such as planetary gravity assists, aerobraking, and low-energy transfers—that reduce propellant demands. Real-world examples from both Earth-orbiting and planetary missions will be used to illustrate these concepts in practice.
